How to Cut a Mirror

How to cut a large bathroom mirror Hey, Brent here from Gray House Studio Today I am going to show you how to cut a large bathroom mirror. We’re going to take this mirror that spanned our whole vanity and recycle it by cutting it into two separate narrow mirrors. Then we will take the mirror, frame it and hang it back over each sink. We found this is a great solution because it is already the height we need, and from experience know it is hard to find cheap tall mirrors and of course it saves money because we are using what we already have rather than buying two new mirrors. The first thing that I am going to do is mark the width I want the mirror to be. This one is going to be 21 inches wide and I’m going to use a sharpie to make the mark some people would say to use a wax marker or crayon to mark with but the sharpie works fine and is easy to wipe off. This board I will use for the straight edge so that the when I drag the cutter to score the glass it won’t move and I can clamp it down. I’ll use this all purpose oil and a glass cutter. The oil will sit on the glass and keep the cutter cool as it scores the glass. After your squirt a few drops of oil on the glass and rub it over to where it is going to go Then you just simply take the blade you have to cut with a firm amount of pressure but you have to do it all in one take If you stop and start over then you will end up with two scores and the glass won’t break correctly. Once you get it scored all the way you can unclamp the board and you are going to use the little metal part on the back of the cutter. This part right here. You just lift up the mirror and tap on the back side of it. Be careful handling the mirror once you get it cut. This top edge is going to be pretty sharp. You can use some fine grit sand paper to smooth it down making it a lot safer to handle when you are framing it. That is how we cut a mirror. Thanks for watching this video. 1. thanks for the video… i am planning to do the exact same thing. $20 for a used bathroom mirror to make some mirrored doors. 🙂

  2. We are glad this video has come in handy. We are happy to know that other people are as excited as we were when we figured out how easy cutting a mirror can be.

  3. I would love to see a video on how you made a frame for the mirrors. I took down my sliding mirror closet doors and one of them as a crack I would like to cut off then convert it into a large mural type mirror.

  4. well "HOOTT DOOGGG." is what I yelled during this video. Thank you so much, y'all are the bomb!!!

  5. What was the thickness of the mirror & where can I get cheap mirror from that I can use to build a vanity? Thanks.

  6. Dude, this is awesome. We are planning on doing the exact same thing in our bathroom. Looks easy enough!!

  7. I want to do this but I have to get the mirror off the wall first!! It's glued on and in an alcove 🙁 Any ideas for getting it off my wall?? did I mention the mirror is mounted between two walls with about 3 inches on either side? 🙁

  8. awesome vid! where did you get that glass cutter? i only found a red one at HD and it didn't have good reviews.

  9. Great video, I'm gonna cut a few mirrors tomorrow. I just have a little question since I am not very fluent in English thus couldn't understand the whole video, what is the oil for? Is it bad if I don't use it?

  10. Any chance on a video or even a picture for framing the mirror, showing how the mirror is adhered to the frame. I have a huge full length mirror I want to move from my closet to a narrow bathroom wall, so now I know at least how to cut it. Thanks for the cutting video! This is a project I am very interested in doing 🙂

  11. thanks for the video. I've been wondering how to do this, and got lucky here–it's the first video I've seen that made sense. How about removing the mirror? Thank you !

  12. I want to do the same with my bathroom mirror which is over 120" wide. Do you know if it is possible to cut the mirror while still on the wall?

  13. Not the way to break apart the cut mirror. Here is how: You simply put the handle of the cutter right below the scored line and apply gentle pressure on both sides of the glass. Done.
